Documentary “The Ground We Walk On”
Produced and reported by Jasmine Jefferson
The Ground We Walk On is a short-form documentary that examines the intersection of history, memory and development in Tallahassee. Through a three-act narrative structure, the film explores how present-day land use decisions continue to impact communities connected to historically Black spaces, including burial grounds and neighborhoods that have been altered or erased over time.
Centered on the controversy surrounding a city-owned golf course linked to unmarked graves, the documentary traces the land’s evolution from its origins to its current state, raising critical questions about preservation, accountability and respect for the past.
Featuring perspectives from local historians, community members and advocates, The Ground We Walk On highlights the ongoing tension between progress and remembrance, offering a deeper look at how history lives beneath the surface of the spaces we occupy.
